Call for Submissions

The PhD forum is a part of ICT-Energy workshop (2014). This forum is a great opportunity for PhD students to present their thesis work to a broad audience in the community from “Toward Zero-Power ICT” (ZEROPOWER) and the novel “MINECC” (Minimising energy consumption of computing to the limit) both industry and academia. The forum may also help students to establish contacts for entering into research related minimization of energy from various layers. In addition, representatives from industry and academia get a glance of state-of-the-art in this energy minimization field.

 

Eligibility

The following two classes of students are eligible:

  • Students who are close to finishing or 2nd year in their thesis work.
  • Students within partner institutions of ICT-Energy consortium and MINECC projects associated in ICT-Energy consortium.

Submission

Submissions need to contain

  • The full contact address, with affiliation, phone, e-mail
  • A 2-page extended abstract describing the novelties and advantages of the thesis work of not more than 1600 words (PDF). The abstract should also include name and affiliation. Figures may be included as far as the 2-page limit is not exceeded.
  •  ICT-Energy Newsletters formatting instruction and template can be downloaded from the attachments given in this page below.

Having progressed beyond Requirements Definition, the ParaDIME Team solicited initial industry feedback by having members of our Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) attend our Technical Meeting held from 5 – 6 September 2013 in Leuven, Belgium.  The meeting participants included 20-plus Principle Investigators, Post-docs and students.  During this 2-day event, Ian Phillips (ARM), Ibrahim Hur (Intel) and Tim Harris (Oracle) not only provided feedback on the technical design but also on the procedures to further the research and development progress of ParaDIME.  The meeting resulted in a lively discussion and excellent take away points.

ParaDIME participates in the new FET Coordination Action Project ICT-Energy

ParaDIME coordinator BSC is one of ten partners participating in the new coordination action entitled "ICT-Energy" that had the "kick-off" meeting on 23 October in Heidelberg, Germany. 

The meeting was hosted by Prof. Vincent Heuveline and his group. All the 10 partners were present in the kick-off of this EC funded project. Most of the partners were involved either with the existing “Toward Zero-Power ICT” community organized within the ZEROPOWER C.A. or the novel FET-proactive program “MINECC” (Minimising energy consumption of computing to the limit).

ParaDIME member wins best paper award at Large Installation and System Administration Conference

ParaDIME member Thomas Knauth wins the best paper award at the 27th Large Installation and System Administration Conference for his work on efficient synchronization of large binary data sets. The conference took place from 3-8 November in Washingtion, D.C., USA this year, drawing over a thousand attendees. The work was honored for its practical impact by providing system administrators with a novel tool to speed up daily administrative data synchronization processes.
 
Sysadmins routinely synchronize state between physically distant servers. Traditional checksum-based tools like, for example, rsync, have a high computational overhead which unnecessarily prolongs the time required for synchronization. The presented tool, called dsync, reduces the synchronization time by tracking changes as they happen. Change tracking obviates the need for post-hoc mechanisms to identify changes, speeding up the synchronization process.
 
In the context of the ParaDIME project dsync enables the swift transfer of virtual machine (VM) disks between servers. VM disks can easily have hundreds of gigabytes of state. Being able to transfer them quickly between servers increases the scheduling flexibility, which in turn allows to turn off servers more frequently and/or for longer time periods.

ParaDIME presents at IEEE Cloud

ParaDIME member Thomas Knauth from TU Dresden presented work done in context of the the ParaDIME project at the IEEE Cloud conference in Santa Clara, CA, USA. The work deals with ways to improve the replication performance for strongly consistent, geo-replicated data stores. The topic is relvant to ParaDIME because we aim to distribute computations across multiple data centers. However, distribution across data centers creates additional challenges for the timely and consistent distribution of data updates. Improving the data store's performance will also benefit the energy efficency. Increasing the number of data store operations per time slice also increases the time that  storage components can be put into low-power modes.

ParaDIME member presents at EuroSys Doctoral Workshop

Preceding this year's EuroSys conference in Prague was the 7th installment of the associated doctoral workshop (EuroDW). ParaDIME team member Thomas Knauth presented his PhD work on energy-efficient web services in a 10 minute talk at the workshop. The workshop also encouraged the presenters to bring along posters describing their work.

ParaDIME Team member Anita Sobe and colleagues were invited to present their paper, Biologically Sound Neural Networks for Embedded Systems Using OpenCL, at the International Conference on NETworked sYStems (NETYS 2013) in Marrakech, Morocco.  See Anita's guest post on the netwerkt blog for a concise description of her presentation in addition to a concise overview of the computing problems that neural networks pose.

ParaDIME Team begins technical brainstorming in Switzerland

The ParaDIME Team held a series of project meetings 13 - 15 February, hosted by the University of Neuchatel in Switzerland.  The meetings opened with a focus on project technical progress with an eye toward realizing the deliverables for the first 6-months of the project.  The outcome of the meeting was a close collaboration on the target success criteria for the project and initial requirements for the ParaDIME Stack.

3-year Post Doc position on minimization of energy to the limit within the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (CAPP Group)

The CAPP group (Computer Architecture for Parallel Paradigms) at the BSC-CNS is in charge of investigatinga top down design, starting from the software needs and ending at microarchitecture. Interested candidates contact: Adrian Cristal (adrian.cristal@bsc.es) and Osman Unsal (osman.unsal@bsc.es).

Research Topic: The increasing power and energy consumption of modern computing devices is perhaps the largest threat to technology minimization and associated gains in performance and productivity. On the one hand, we expect technology scaling to face the problem of “dark silicon” (only segments of a chip can function concurrently due to power restrictions) in the near future and lead us to use devices with completely new characteristics. On the other hand, as core counts increase, the shared memory model based on cache coherence will severely limit scalability and increase energy consumption. Therefore, to overcome these problems, we need new computing paradigms that are radically more energy efficient. The objective of ParaDIME is to attack the power-wall problem by radical software-hardware techniques that are driven by future circuit and device characteristics on one side, and by a programming model based on message passing on the other side. ParaDIME is a FET Proactive FP7 project. The consortium is composed of BSC, University of Neuchatel, Technical University of Dresden, IMEC and AOTerra. The consortium includes experts from circuit and devices, computer architecture, runtime and programming models.

Candidate and Position: We have an immediate opening for a post-doc position. The successful candidate will conduct research, supervise students, and prepare and direct grants. A mixed Computer Architecture / circuit and devices background is preferred; although candidates in either computer architecture or circuits and devices are also encouraged to apply. The salary is competitive with the opportunity to work with researchers at Barcelona Supercomputing Center and with other researchers in the consortium.In addition, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to co-advise PhD students in the group. Initiative, motivation and commitment are expected. Possibilities to extend the duration of the position, to join new projects within the CAPP group or at BSC are possible, depending on performance.

The CAPP Group at the BSC-CNS: The CAPP Group has deep experience in industrial projects, moreover the group is participating in projects with Microsoft and Intel. In the past the group was coordinating the VELOX FP7 project on Transactional Memory, and currently the group in coordinating the ParaDIME Project and is a partner in AXLE FP7 project.
