Green IT: A computer as a furnace – NZZ article on ParaDIME and partners

Mon, 2015-03-02

Why should we put a lot of effort into air conditioning data centers, when the waste heat is needed elsewhere? Responding to this question, a recent article in the Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) points to the potential energy savings which can be made when creating distributed data centers which respond to the heating demands of private homes, apartments and offices, instead of building immense server farms with their known disadvantages.

The article describes the efforts of scientific programs and companies to find a solution for this environmentally friendly approach. ParaDIME consortium members Cloud & Heat Technologies, Université de Neuchâtel and Technische Universität Dresden are mentioned as having some of the most advanced technical networks. You can read the full article (in German) on the NZZ website.

Cloud & Heat is currently working on the task of intelligent scheduling of cloud jobs based on heat demands from our already distributed hardware.
